The History of Greenroom

Discovering the history of Greenroom.

At the bar after a Space Sailer race event hosted by EFYC a guy came up to me and said "I built your boat". It was Brian Saleeba from SoPYC, who sails a SS27 now. He'd seen me on the river and recognised the old fading paint job. I grabbed his contact and he ended up emailing me lots of interesting details and photos.

Brett,

That was good to catch up with you at EFYC last Sun. Your yacht has a thoroughbred history as it became the top performing SS22 in its day. The pics attached show the beast on my front lawn where I fitted it out. Another one is launching day at SPYC in Oct ’77. The other one shows that she was no stranger to the ocean. I will send some more pics on another email.

Regards,

Brian

Brett,

So far so good then. These pics show the result of another successful season (including my daughter who skippered it in the ladies’ skippers’ race). In Geordie Bay with the crew. Somewhere on the Swan. I had the beast for 12 years and during that time she won many club and State championship series. In 1989 I had my new boat, the SS27 also in the front lawn while I fitted it out. One day a cousin and his wife visited and as they left, she said that she would like to purchase the 22. I said that was OK but she couldn’t have the name. So she settled on Leda from the mythological Leda and the Swan. She sailed it out of CYC with a group of ladies as the crew. Unfortunately she came down with some health problems and sold the boat. Over the years I noticed it languishing on a mooring in Matilda Bay in a non-cared for condition, which was a great shame for such a pedigreed vessel. Hopefully you can get some of the satisfaction that I enjoyed while I had it.

Regards,

Brian
